How does an air purifier work?

In premises where materials are processed or handled, dust and other small particles can become airborne. The air purifier draws in the contaminated air from the room and passes it through a pre-filter and a fine filter. The particles are trapped there before the purified air is returned to the room.

The continuous air circulation reduces the amount of airborne particles and complements the extraction system, which captures dust directly at source. This helps to keep the indoor air, work surfaces and surrounding equipment cleaner.

Air purifiers and the working environment

Dust and other airborne particles can affect air quality, the working environment and day-to-day operations. An air purifier circulates the air through one or more filters and captures particles that have already become airborne in the premises. This can reduce dust levels and help to ensure cleaner air, work surfaces and equipment.

The air purifier should be regarded as a complement to local exhaust ventilation and process ventilation. Pollutants generated during a work process should, as a priority, be captured as close to the source as possible. The air purifier then removes some of the particles that do end up in the room air.

To ensure it is effective, the air purifier must be selected based on the size of the room, the dust load and the types of particles present. Positioning, air flow and filter class all affect the outcome. Regular checks, cleaning and filter replacement are necessary to maintain performance and prevent a reduction in air flow.
